Wormwood Prophecy
~~~ Interpreter
~~~ Homicyde
~~~ Divulgence
Wormwood Prophecy, a Jacksonville shred-metal band, arises amongst the hordes of carbon copy "core" bands dominating the local scene. Despite the endless onslaught of the indistinguishable majority, they have proven to have the balls to make a name for themselves. With their flame throwing axes, Jon and Mat lay down a fiery path of destruction followed by Cody's 5 string demonizing sledgehammer cracking open the gates of Hades, With Victor leading the unrelenting march with rhythmic fury to the apocalypse known as the Wormwood Prophecy. In June 2011, Wormwood Prophecy embarked on a month long do-it yourself tour of the US East Coast. After getting their first real taste of being on the road, they have been recording new material with new members Cody and Andrew to release their full length in 2012, and will going on more tours, conquering new territories, and unleashing their own new style of heavy metal to the world.
Homicyde is a band that started about 2 years ago, working up enough material to play their first show about a year ago @ the slave to the metal music festival hosted by mistress juliya. Constantly playing shows whenever there is an opportunity, spreading the buzz about the band all over SC. Maturing slowly but surely into the band we hope to be. We are always working on new material and have just finished recording our first full length album. We have shared the stage with national acts Threat Signal, Revocation, Goatwhore, and Withered.
Perlowin's solo acoustic guitar music is rooted in the American finger-style tradition of Mississippi John Hurt and John Fahey, etc, and mixed with his own idiosyncratic twists, drawing influence from classical music, traditional Chinese music, African music, Flamenco, and jazz.
Slug's Revenge
~~~ The Outdoor Protestant Blues Band
You'll never hear fans of Slug's Revenge complaining about a dead stage presence or boring music. In fact, instead of being described as "playing" their instruments, more accurately has been described as "shredding". With fast and precise pickers leading the way like Kevin Wykoff, Allen Johnson and a madwoman on fiddle like Crystal Kanney fans are kept energized and captivated. Holding down the backbone is Desiree Shaffer on upright bass and multi-instrumentalist Pat Regan on washboard, tenor guitar and banjo. Slug's Revenge has been met with praise from both the underground and traditional music circuit, playing a blend of traditional tunes mixed with a unique brand of original music that ranges from political ballads to songs rooted in historical folklore.
The Outdoor Protestant Blues Band is a one man band, currently recording with lord byron live in his living room. he also plays in say brother and mercy mercy me

Chemical Peel
Different kinds of sounds can bring about very intense, or sometimes very mellow feelings when you really pay attention to them. Most music that you may have heard, or will eventually hear from local, or national rock and roll acts won't do either of these for you. The formula's have been thought out, and played out.
Chemical Peel is from Columbia, SC
Of Hoof and Horn is an "animal farm" based (as in George Orwell's) stoner metal band that plays a half hour piece of music and has puppets. yes, puppets. It's called 'of hoof and horn' and is fun as heck. I love science and nature.

Know Tyme
Hubert Maxwell, also known as Know Tyme, has loved music since the age of five. He began expressing his love of music by playing the piano and soon after began writing poetry. When Hubert was in the seventh grade, he joined a band and became a percussionist in the school band. In high school, he met a friend by the name of Michael Joyner who shared his love of music. Together, along with a friend named Julian Cole, they formed a group known as the Dolla $ign Boys. From there, they all began creating their own music and followed their passion of the art itself. Now a student at The University of South Carolina, Hubert shares his love of music with other passions such as track, studying, class and a social life. Somehow, he still manages to find time for his main passion: music.

The Fishing Journal
* Alison Self
* Brownbird Rudy Relic
The Fishing Journal was formed in Columbia, S.C. in 2011. Started as a vehicle to perform the recorded works of Christopher Powell (ex - Death Becomes Even the Maiden, Mercy Shot), The Fishing Journal is a power trio employing the talents of Reno Gooch on electric bass (ex - Bar Fight, current - SpaceCoke, Mercy Shot) and also the talents of Josh Latham (ex - The Restoration, You Are Being Invaded By Demons) on the drums. Powell plays the electric guitar and sings.
Alison Self is a singer and ukulele player. She plays a mix of country blues and jazz, with some originals thrown in as well. She has been singing since she could talk. According to her grandmother, some of her first hits included renditions of "Scooby Doo, Where Are You" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Alison grew up in Petersburg, VA and picked up the ukulele in December of 2005 impulsively after being inspired by Janet Klein and also growing impatient waiting for people to start bands with. VIDEO
Reltone recording artist Brownbird Rudy Relic, from NYC, is a blues music anomaly. Equal parts pre-war blues, Mexican romantic ballads, 90's R & B and 50's Doo Wop, he eschews the usual traditional blues modus operandi to create and purvey music unlike anything within the contemporary blues scene: Acoustic Holler Blues. Scouts *
Future Wives *
Marshall Brown *
Elvis Depressedly
Scouts is a quartet from Kansas City, Missouri. The quartet has strayed a bit from the chimmey crescendos and epic choruses it was once known for in the region, yet there is no way for Thomas to escape the melodic purity and ghostly shimmer of his voice. These four musicians hold true to their Midwestern roots and dialect, but show a promise of appeal beyond the streets of small Midwestern cities and dismal college towns. Their music as been said to have the strength of Shoegaze icons My Bloody Valentine, the lyrical credibility of Pedro the Lion/David Bazan, and the melodic purity of 'Clarity era' Jimmy Eat World.
Future Wives can best be described as a concept band. Songs about ex girlfriends and the scars and memories they left. Each song is cutting a personal. Bitter and upfront. A relationship boiled down to a song, and he's the one on stage bearing it all. Best of all, each song is named after the girl being painted on the wall by each song. You hide your journal under your bed, he put his out for the world to see.-SceneSC
Just two years ago Marshal Brown and his band, The Reverie, were playing to a packed house at the Art Bar for Free Times Music Crawl. Since then his band has broken up and Brown drifted out of the music scene and into a world of recording and focusing on his own music. Two years later, he has released his new album New Moons digitally on Bandcamp. From the opening of "Death and Taxes" through the closing seconds of the album, Brown uses his voice as a weapon of melody, layering vocals on top of vocals with swaying guitars to obtain an effect only fully appreciated with headphones. In a day and age where making a full album has been lost, Brown has released a complete album filled with interludes, highs and lows, backwards guitars and vocals, and psychedelic moments that will take you out of your listening setting.-SceneSC
Elvis Depressedly is a solo project by Mat of Coma Cinema.

The Outdoor-Protestant Blues Band: The name is a reference to a George Carlin joke (see track "Wonderful Wino" on his record AM/FM), he's a pers
onal hero to me. I write songs about women, drugs, loneliness, and god/atheism. The songs have all got a strong foothold in depravity I guess, though they are mostly pretty catchy and poppy. My influences are
pretty widespread, but all related in my opinion. Specific rhythm guitar players, and country or blues songwriters are who I'd usually list. Junior Kimbrough's "First Recordings" is my all-time favorite record
. Ron Asheton (The Stooges), Ricky Wilson (The B-52's), Dexter Romweber (Flat Duo Jets) are a few of my favorite guitarists. Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, and Gram Parsons are big influences on my songwriting
. Obvious influences like Hasil Adkins and Mark Sultan (King Kahn and BBQ Show), other one-man-bands are still relevant.

Forks Over Knives SC Progressive Network Movie of the Month
FORKS OVER KNIVES is a wonderful film, chock full of crucial information but also easy and fun to watch. It's about 90 minutes long. The doc focuses on health, thus the title Forks Over Knives (knives referring to bypass and other surgeries) though Farm Sanctuary's Gene Baur appears briefly. You will not be subjected to scenes of factory farm horror- instead you'll see an interview with an MMA fighter who is vegan, extensive evidence of health hazards caused by the meat and dairy in human diets, and watch what happens when the doc's narrator decides to try a whole foods, plant-based diet during the duration of the filming (the results are quite amazing).
You'll also see how the US government ignores this information in order to protect the status quo.
There will be good FOOD! Bring a whole foods, plant based dish if you like- though this is NOT required, and you don't have to bring something to eat. Dishes must be free of added fat/oil and animal ingredients.
Beer and other beverages will be available for purchase.

David Thomas: "Baptized Into The Buzz"
Founder of legendary avant-rock band Pere Ubu, singer David Thomas has been re-writing the rules of popular music for more than 36 years. Formed in Cleveland OH in 1975, Pere Ubu integrated found sound, analog synthesizers and musique concrete into a hybrid of overdriven midwestern garage rock tempered by abstract sensibilities. The band's first release, The Modern Dance (1978), can be found on all sorts of critics' lists of "The Great Albums." Over the years Pere Ubu has released a stream of uncompromising, highly original records, the latest being the junk operatic "Long Live Pere Ubu!" (2009).
As a complement to his work with Pere Ubu, Mr Thomas has explored any number of implausible creative configurations and seemingly arbitrary production methods. This here concert will be a solo affair.

Death of Paris
, Hank & Cupcakes
, Jurassic Heat,
& Hauswerk
"DEATH OF PARIS combines the mysterious, seductive female vocals of Curve or Metric with the chattering electronics of first-album Killers, adding a pounding, bombastic rhythm section and serrated, jagged-edge rock guitar. It's all in service of propulsive, instantly memorable songs that sprout hooks somewhere in the chaos and don't let go. This band has an exciting sound and true songwriting talent."
Brooklyn-based drums and bass duo HANK & CUPCAKES spin vicious pop that is just as good for rocking out as it is for dancing. Cupcakes will make your jaw drop with her explosive, commanding voice while banging on the drums standing up! Hank on the bass takes care of the rest, covering so much territory that one critic observed "fans may find themselves scrutinizing the stage, looking in vain for the guitar player that seems to be filling out the band's sound."
JURASSIC HEAT first crawled out of the primordial soup of nasty jazz and filthy blues in the fall of 2010. Amy Quint's smoky vocals soar over Zach Toman's screaming riffs, nailed to the floor by Steven Van Haren's neanderthalic pounding. Will Royster's four strings keep your hips moving whether you like it or not.
HAUSWERK is an all-housewife punk band from Columbia, SC. It is comprised of Songstress Giantess Katherine McCollough screeching the lyrics, Jessica Oliver shredding the power chords, Delaney Mills bringing the bass/apathy, & Brielle Hayes banging on drums with kitchen utensils. You're grounded.

In these inspirations and aberrations, all is revealed, nothing is sacred. SC Progressive Network MOVIE NIGHT
"THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD"
A wickedly fun skewering of corporate greed, THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD is the true story of two conscientious mischief-makers who pose as the representatives of companies they despise. In this wonderfully therapeutic film, Yes Men Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno impose cosmic (and comic) justice by any means necessary.
To a television audience of 200 million, Andy (posing as a Dow Chemical spokesman) announces that Dow will finally compensate the victims of the Bhopal disaster, causing the company's stock to instantly plunge by $2 billion. At an oil industry conference, the Yes Men introduce a wonderful new Exxon miracle fuel made from the bodies of global warming losers.
THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD "shines with a raw wit and originality" (Newsweek) as it fearlessly follows the twisted logic of corporate capitalism to its crazy conclusion, exposing the hilarious and awful absurdities of the economic system that ruthlessly rules the planet.
Free admission, popcorn and after-film discussion. Bring your own non-alcoholic beverages.

CALTROP

With thick, fuzzed out riffs leading the charge on most of their songs, CALTROP exists at the improbable intersection of Sabbath and the Allman Brothers Band, creating detuned, psychedelic dirges with a soulful Southern blues/rock inflection. The concert, subtractions (2): fields have ears, will explore various soundscapes composed of sustained instrumental sonorities, field recordings, and sine tones. Since the early 1990s, Pisaro's work, inspired in part by his affiliation with the Wandelweiser Composers Ensemble, has traced the consequences of using silence, duration, rational structure and text in the post-4'33" experimental tradition. His recent work focuses on acoustic environments marked by subtle timbral shifts, noise complexes and sustained tones. Coma Cinema
, Cassangles, & Zoe Lollis
Mat Cothran began writing songs under the name "Coma Cinema" at the age of 15. After years of performing locally to promote his music, Cothran released a collection of his recordings in January 2009, entitled Baby Prayers. His most recent record, 2011's Blue Suicide has received considerable national attention on the heels of a positive Pitchfork review and multiple tours with Toro y Moi. Cothran has said this will be one of the final Coma Cinema shows as he will be turning his musical attention to other projects for a while.
With its phonetically malapropistic name, Columbia, South Carolina's Cassangles defies any qualifying genre distinction. There are scraps and strains of familiar sounds to be sure, but they're fused together loosely in chaotic bursts of energy and underscored by the youthful disdain of form and structure. The brashness of this band's ethos and execution is infectious. With flowery basslines reminiscent of Minutemen-era Mike Watt and experimental deconstructive guitar work, Cassangles attacks its lengthy instrumentals with a penchant for the unorthodox and the unexpected, particularly in the animalistic percussion that veers in and out of jazz phrasing and punk calamity. Highly recommended.
"Zoe's sound is nostalgic of old railroad music, where people sang about their simple lives in small towns, wishing for the boxcars to take them somewhere greater. Her voice is full and her strumming is definitive, like a wagon on a rail. Seeing and hearing her play takes me to 1932-- where people are sitting and watching trains go by and playing music because there's really not much else to do."

JEFF KIMMEL, bass clarinet & DEREK POTEAT, bass guitar
Jeff Kimmel is a Chicago-based bass clarinetist, improviser, composer and music presenter. His work encompasses a commitment to expand the timbral possibilities of the bass clarinet while presenting the instrument in a variety of formats, and he strives to foster a collaborative music community by facilitating opportunities for musicians.
Derek Poteat (ex-Ahleuchatistas) says "I have always wanted to be a bass player, even before I knew exactly what that meant. Perhaps I still do not know what that means, but that is what I am. I would like to continue to explore the limitless sound opportunities of the bass and share those with anyone who is interested."

River Monks, Elizabeth Arynn, & Thomas Ray
RIVER MONKS. Scholars maintain that a very long time ago, a group of monks trapped fish in the river that now runs through our city, and some French folks took note of this and eventually named Des Moines after them.

Inspired by artists such as Regina Spektor, Jenny Lewis, and Ingrid Michaelson, Elizabeth Arynn is a self taught accomplished songwriter and musician whose writing inspiration comes from past experiences both positive and negative. She has recently completed her debut album, The Drifter.

GLASS GNATS & MUSICK & ST. JACQUES
Formed in the fall of 1982, the GLASS GNATS were a popular band on the Columbia new-wave scene for most of the decade. Known for their lively blend of jazz, rock, and quirky alt-rock rhythms, the Gnats drew big crowds at clubs such as The Beat, Rockafellas', and the G.R.O.W. Cafe. Recently the band has reformed with a leaner, more-rocking sound, although their experimental sensibilities remain intact. The current line-up features original guitarists Billy Chapman and Benoit St. Jacques, with bassist Ben Dubard and drummer Steve Dennis.
NICKI ANAHATA MUSICK is a singer who likes to make every song her own. BENOIT ST. JACQUES is a talented fingerstyle guitarist who plays with a rare emotional depth. Together, Musick and St. Jacques blend the folk music of Quebec, Canada (where Benoit is from), America, and the British Isles into a unique, contemporary form of acoustic music. They've been playing together for the better part of three decades, and their musical collaborations are always free flowing and soulful.

THE SHANIQUA BROWN cd release party w/ BULLY PULPIT & MODERN MAN
"THE SHANIQUA BROWN is rock 'n' roll. No need to get fancy here, the music is too special to demean with a series of hyphens and comparison... Armed with an unforgettable voice that tingles the spine, Gillon proves she is more than just a captivating performer."

PINNA & CLETUS BALTIMORE
"There are two definitions of the word Pinna, depending on how far back you want to go linguistically; it's either the outer visible part of your ear or, in the original Latin, a feather. For the Columbia band that uses the word for its name, a combination of the two works nicely to describe its sound, an outwardly funky yet lightweight version of classic jam-rock that sticks out primarily due to all the instrumental curves the individual members tend to tickle their audience with. Whatever the name, it's bound to catch your entire ear, inside and out."

ANDY THE DOORBUM
Sunday, September 18, 2011

9pm         $7
| ANDY THE DOORBUM creates a brew of styles, from 2-step to rockabilly and an acoustic punk/hardcore attitude. Rumour has it that LE SINGE BLANC is a sort of excitable yeti stomping around the Vosges Mountains. All we know for sure is that they are from France, and that they promise to bring their nonsensical anti-pop sound and mouth-watering lyrics with heavy blows of bass and drums. We can hardly ask for more than that. CAN'T KIDS is a Southern-Gothic-Depression-Era-Cheerleader-Metal band that formed in a frenzy & a series of ongoing fits of lunacy during November 2010 when members Adam Cullum & Jessica Oliver moved into an extra giant old house with their friend Brielle. All three tenants are now convinced that aforementioned house is indeed haunted. |

TURKU
Music from the western half of the Silk Road - saz, violin, hand drums, davul, zils, bass guitar
"The striking thing about Turku's music is the wonderful tapestry of textures, the rhythmic changes and virtuosity, the beautifully soulful takseems (improvisation) the gamut of emotions and moods from joyful and delightful to stately and somber, the ease with which the musicians go from heavy to light sounds and the perfect ornamentation for each piece."

DAVID DANIELL NOAH BROCK
"With his slow-moving, understated music, DAVID DANIELL makes a fine spokesman for the notion that anything worth doing is worth doing for a long, long time. Whether he's contributing moody strums and sculpted E-Bow drones to the guitar trio San Agustin or stringing computer-generated pings and bumps across gulfs of silence on Sem, his solo debut on his own Antiopic label, he develops his material patiently, the better to let you observe the sounds from every angle."--Bill Meyer, Chicago Reader
